Take for instance, spinach.
I have been craving spinach all week. Just knowing that I can't have it drives me nuts. Yesterday at the grocery store there was no fresh spinach, of course. There was even a produce guy gamely re-sorting all the bagged salad mixes, just in case. And to look vigilant I guess.
I was craving Chicken Tika Masala with spinach. TG the frozen spinach was still there! Picked over, but there. I got the last box of whole leaf, thawed it & squeezed all the water out. It tasted okay in the chicken. Not as nice as fresh, but not bad.
Do you use those bagged salad mixes? How often? Did you eat fresh bagged spinach last week and live to tell the tale? Do you even eat spinach?

I love spinach! Yes I have been craving it ever since they have been pulled.
I love it in Italian food mostly. Although I love it sauteed with garlic too.
Now I want more spinach.
I use the salad bags.
My bag from the local Piggly Wiggly was ok. The story broke in our area the day after I had finished off a bag (which I mostly ate in fresh salads).
I don't usually buy the bagged salads. I like lots of different veggies in my salads. The bags are usually limited. They aren't always fresh, depending on what store I'm at. I can sometimes visibly see bad lettuce in the bottom. It also doesn't last more than a few days once it is open. Regular heads last longer. AND, if it's a kit, I usually won't use the dressing. Itry to only use non-fat dressings.
I made Chicken Tika Masala last Friday and finally finished it yesterday! You should have come to my place for dinner!
*pout* I wasn't invited, HD.
As if you need an invitation!
To my knowledge, I have only eaten spinach once, in a Wendy's spinach salad. I did not like it. The flavor was too strong for my poor taste buds. Or it could have been the wretched dressing. I'm not sure. Worst.salad.ever.
I am boring with my salads. Lettuce, carrots, fat free dressing.
I had been eating the bagged spinach lately in omelettes and on sandwiches.
I use the bags, and I never washed it until now.
BTW, the last spinach crops are coming in at Farmer's Markets. So if you really want some fresh spinach, check there.
Yeah, the Farmer's Market would be an option, but I didn't want to wait until the weekend. I am just bummed that the little pickling cucumbers (gherkins) are all gone. They are so tasty in salads or just by themselves! I hate regular cucumbers and English cucumbers are just so mild they're tasteless.
I do use those bagged salads, but not the spinach. Isn't it funny how we want something even more when we can't have it?
Dear Swami,
I am having Palak Paneer for dinner on Sunday. Since I know you enjoy spinach, please join me at 6 pm. If you would like to bring a white wine, I would gratefully accept it.
Sincerely,
HD
Hey, I'm a Contrarian too! :)
I like spinach salad, spinach dip, and other things with spinach. Bit if I want a cooked green, I eat swiss chard. We grow it in our gardena nd I have tone of the stuff. It's WAYYYY better than spinahc and delicious with some balsamic vinegar.
I use Costco lettuce for salads mostly; a combination of mixed greens and head lettuce. The bag stuff does spoil very quickly!
I use bagged salad every once in a while, but since I'm the only one who eats salad it can go bad before I finish it.
Love the pickling cucumbers too! They are definitely the most tasty. My dad always plants cucumbers and it's such a joy to go out and pick one that is just barely a few inches long. Fresh tomatoes and teeny cucumbers = joy!
MTW -- my dad plants all kinds of greens, including swiss chard. I love turnip greens, collard greens, etc. YUM!
I like frozen spinich because it keeps.
Fresh spinich can turn into bags of green liquid and that's just icky.
I think that may say more about my housekeeping than about spinich though.
Dear HD,
I love Palek Paneer! It's one of my favorite dishes! Do you make your own paneer? I love that stuff.
I'll bring some Pinot Grigio.
MTW, my dad used to grow all kinds of chards, but as a kid I refused to eat it.
