My Interview Questions, from HistoryDetective

1. If you were stuck on a desert island, which two books do you want to have with you?

Well, one would have to be a really long, engrossing, thriller novel by one of my favorite authors - so The Stand, by Stephen King. Frivolous perhaps, but such darn good fun. The other book would be the biggest, fattest, unabridged etymological dictionary I could find! Full of info and snipets of stories, poetry and quotations. I love reading from huge dictionaries. I could find something new every day of my life.

2. If you could be a contestant on any reality TV program, which program would you choose?

The Amazing Race, because it is exciting, thoughtful, and you get to do such an assortment of amazing things all over the world - things nobody else gets to do! And you do it all with your Best Friend (by whatever name you call your best friend.)

3. What is your favorite gift that any of your children ever gave to you? (You can choose one per child if you wish.)

My oldest daughter once gave me some trinket jewelry gift - I don't even remember what it was - but I still have the decorated box she made to put it in. It's quite small, about 3 x 5 x 1&1/2. She made it from 2 sheets of construction paper which she figured out how to fold into a bottom and seperate, lift-off top that fit perfectly! She used no tape, no glue, just clever folds to construct it. There were no loose edges of any kind; it was perfect! I was quite blown away by the combination of artistry, engineering and execution. She was 10 years old.

My youngest daughter was given the materials to make a clothespin Rudolph Reindeer tree decoration as a parental gift when she was in 4th grade (most parents will know more or less what this looks like.) She made a lovely little Rudolph with two additions: 1. Sticking our below his little nose are two huge white enamel-painted fangs. And 2. he has a flowing red felt cape. It's Vampire Rudolph!!! I love that thing so much. The teacher apologized for it but I just said "That's my girl!"

4. If you won the lottery and could afford to move anywhere in the world, where would you choose to live?

I would live on the Big Island, Hawaii. I love the gentle open-mindedness of contemporary Hawaiian culture. It is a cross-roads for the best of Eastern & Western culture. The climate is fabulous, and the Big Island has it all--rain forests to deserts. It has Mauna Loa, the earth's most massive volcano (now dormant) and Kilauea, the world's most active volcano. I love Hawaii.

5. Which historical figure, living or dead, famous or not, do you most admire?

I have always admired Margaret Mead, an anthropolgist who was just such a shinning light to me from my college years until the day she died. I have read so many of her ethnographies and scholarly papers. I loved her autobiographical novels - especially Blackberry Winter. I loved that when most women of her age were living lives so tightly bound by convention they seemed smothered, she was running around the globe and reinventing anthropology. Coming of Age In Samoa, one of her first full-length ethnographies was so excellent it became a mainstream Best Seller. She exposed the male-centered viewpoint that so many thoughtful anthropologists had not even known they possessed. She was an out-spoken free-thinker her whole life and I loved her for it.

Poor Little Daffodils

This is what that nasty cold snap in early April did to my poor daffodils. (I'm looking down at them laying flat on the ground; you may have to click the photo to even see the buds.) The weatherman said it might get chilly overnight - then it went down to 14'F and pretty much stayed there for 10 days. The daffodil buds lay on the ground like this for the next 2 weeks.

So I thought "Hey, what if I cut those flower buds off and stick them in water? What will happen?"

So I did. The stems were so mushy that I couldn't get more than about 4 inches of stem that seemed intact enough that it might be capable of drawing up water. Low and behold the buds started blooming within hours! Okay - they are sad and pathetic blossoms compared to what they could have been. But hey. They tried!!!

Just for fun, I left Clarabelle in the frame. I like Clarabelle.

Not Much

I have thought of at least three perfectly good topics over the past couple of days, but I am drawing nothing but blanks this morning. So I have decided to just spin a wheel in my head, babble about whatever topic comes up and call it an update. So here we go...

*spins big Wheel of Fortune-y disc that occupies most of my brain*

bip bip bip bip bip

And the topic is? Good Neighbour Sam.

My neighbour Sam doesn't like me, which is fine because I don't like him either. He's a blowhard asshole among other faults and we tend to avoid each other. So imagine my surprise when (as I was putting out and cleaning the furniture on my back deck) he hailed me from a nearby path and then walked over, all friendly-like.

"Swami? How are you! Boy you guys have done a lot of work lately."

Since I was on our newly finished deck as replied "Yeah, Tom and I kind of made this up as we went along, but it turned out really well."

"Looks real nice," Sam said - then got down to the real reason he was there. *Looks at Graycie* "So. That's your cat. She's not the one"

Background: Several times this winter Sam has phoned me to complain that my cat was over at his house killing songbirds. Each time I have told him either "no, that doesn't sound like my cat" or "no, that can't be my cat because she is sitting right here." Evidently he didn't believe me at the time.

But now there's my Graycie sitting at my feet - clearly innocent since she is much smaller and has way fewer white marking than Bird-eater. Sam fills me in on his plan to get a super-soaker water gun, fill it with vinegar and blast Bird-eater. Which is fine with me because Bird-eater is also a bully-cat who comes over here and corners Graycie all the time.

So Sam and I have bonded over bird-eating cats. Maybe we can be friends after all! *gags*

Mmmm Mmmm Good!

For her birthday, April wanted an ice cream cake from Cold Stone Creamery. This is the one she had made: yellow cake layered with {cake batter ice cream with mini marshmallows and dark cherries}. I put that into {} because that's the ice cream "flavor".

Freakin' good! Leaves DQ ice cream cakes in the dust!

She wanted an adult looking cake, so no fro-fro frosting stuff, just graham cracker crumbs up the sides a bit, and Reese's Peanut Butter Cups halved and dipped in grahan cracker crumbs on top. We did find some really cute candles at Target that added a nice touch of whimsy to over-all look.

So. Freakin'. Good. And? There's still some in the freezer!!!

Giant, Mutant Septic Spiders and Other Friday Randoms.

1. Giant Spider

Last night as went into the master bath for one last tinkle I was totally taken off guard by a huge, HUGE hunting spider. You know the kind – big eyes, long thick legs – kind of like this guy (I Googled the pic; I did not stick around to take a pic of my spider!)

So I bravely ran out of the bathroom yelling “TOM!! TOOOOMMMM!!!”

Mr. Swami whacked it with a wet washcloth and flushed it down the toilet. This is what we do with spiders. Then later that night I had my spider dream. I was outside. It was a lovely Spring morning and I was planting some Impatiens in the flower garden over my septic tank. I stuck the shovel into the packed earth and broke it open. Spiders began to pour out! Giant, mutant spiders!!! Seems that all the spiders we had flushed over the years were somehow living and breeding in our septic tank – where they had evolved into hugely hideous killing machines! (This morning I’m kinda nervous about sitting on the can, lol.)

2. Missing Luggage, Day Six.

*ring*
*ring*

“Hello? Is this Mr Swami? Good news, sir! We found your suitcase. It’s right here in Little Rock, waiting for you to pick it up.”

These guys are just too stupid to live.

3. Happy Birthday

Sunday is my middle DD’s 23 birthday. When did she get so old? And why is she still living at home?

4. Tippy Toes is a happy kitty this morning. I have started to eat breakfast cereal in the mornings again so he got to lick my bowl. Now he’s napping on the side of my computer desk. Nice kitty. I’d take a photo but the desk is too messy and besides I think Mr Swami took the camera into work today.

Missing Suitcase, Day Five

American Airlines is so screwed up! Mr Swami still hasn't got his suitcase. Now they are telling him that it hasn't been sitting in Little Rock after all. Somehow, it is in Wichita (Tom never went through Wichita.) And they can't forward it to him until it goes to Little Rock first because that's The Way It Works.

They lost it Sunday. Today is Thursday. Every time he talks to them it's like starting at square one again. The guy he talked to yesterday told him well, they couldn't possibly deliver it to his place of work if that meant leaving it at a security desk - that's Not The Way That It Works. They need a letter giving them specific permission to leave it at a security desk. Letter was written, faxed.

If the suitcase is not here by the end of the day I told Tom he should just make a claim. Screw it.

-Electric shaver - $90
-2 dress shirts - $40 each
-2 dress pants - $70 each (even though I think we got them on sale)
-1 light embroidered "Champ" jacket - $50? (I don't remember)
-assorted toiletries and underwear - maybe $25? (He had to check the bag because he didn't want to throw away his precious Body Butter, lol)

Poor Mr Swami

First he had to go to Arkansas. Then he passed a kidney stone at the airport. Then he had to check his carry-on because he had too many banned "liquids" (lotions and balms and such) that he didn't want to discard. Then the airline lost his bag. He arrived in Little Rock after 9 p.m. so everything was closed. Hotel gave him a toothbrush, shaver and basic toiletries but he had to go to his 8 a.m. meeting wearing his travel clothes (jeans and a "retired" dress shirt.) Work people raided their corporate closet and gave him a new dress shirt with their logo on the pocket, and a nice logo baseball cap to complete the outfit, lol.

He left right after the day's worth of meetings. He checked for his luggage at the Arkansas airport (still lost they said) then went through security. Waiting at the gate he got a call on his cell-phone that they found his luggage but he had to pick it up. So he went back out to the luggage department where they told him "Oops. We don't have it. No idea why you got that message. Some kind of glitch."

So he had to go back through security again.

When he finally got to MSP at about 10 p.m. that night he went to Luggage here to be sure they had his correct forwarding address. Luggage Dept said "Good news. We found your luggage! It's been waiting for you in Arkansas!" Stupid screwed up airline. His luggage was probably there the whole time!

It was a sadly wrinked Mr Swami who walked in my door at 11:30 p.m. I told him he looked just like an Arkansan. He had the grace to laugh.

4 Wide X 6 Deep

That's how big the crowd was waiting to buy ice cream at a local Dairy Queen last night. Four windows, six or more people at each. When you warm Minnesotans up to 55'F they will put on shorts and go to the Dairy Queen. This many white, white legs means spring must come soon.

Tom just left for Arkansas. He is going to spend one (count 'em - one) lovely day in Little Rock talking to idiots. For this privelege he has to spend almost 10 hours of travel time because he has to change planes at O'Hare both ways. He was not in a good mood as he left.

Tonight I am taking the DD and her BF to Red Lobster for dinner. This is the beginning of her birthday week celebration. Actual birthday? Next Sunday.

I Have a New Parrot !

Her name is Kiki. She is medium sized and all bright green except for more yellowish green on the underside near her tail and bright rose spots on both cheeks. She's beautiful.

I got her when she flew by the huge, open windows of this big loft where I live. I yelled "Hey! Parrot! Look here!" and threw some pistachios on the floor. Kiki flew right into my room and started eating, so I shut the window and now she's mine.

And yes it was only a dream - but such a vivid one! I still feel confused. I may have to go buy some bird seed later today. I have always wanted a parrot...

My dirty little secret

I have started watching Lou SmartyDobbPants on CNN. Sometimes I kind of agree with stuff he's saying. Not always, tg, but sometimes. What's wrong with me? Sheesh.

Tormented Spring

That's what we're calling it now. Today we're supposed to get "slushy, sloppy, cement-like snow." I am on the dividing line of the 2" - 4" area and the 6" - 10" area. Guess which amount I want?

So in order to fight back I have decided to start growing these again:

Aren't they lovely? Who could feel winter blue with cheery little bursts of color like this saying Good Morning! to you?

My current houseplants are either all green or multi-colored Crotons. I also have an aspidistra that won't stop blooming, with those white callas-lily type blooms that they have.

Tell me about your houseplants!

The Day After

I love chicken sausage! See comments in post below if you're interested. But three sausages is too much for me. I felt kinda like a TAR contestant at the end there. Although Tom did enjoy his "Look! Another sausage!" moment later that evening.

We had the coldest easter in 76 years or something. Quite pathetic. Easter bunny had to burn her baskets to stay warm.

Bangers and Mash

This is what I have decided to have for Easter dinner, lol. Good ol' bangers and mash.

Doesn't it look nice? I am not a huge fan of ham, but I never met a sausage I didn't like.

I have a nice chicken sausage with feta and spinach stuffing, some Andouille and some good old Polish sausage. I have garlic and green onions to mix into the mash. Add a nice, loaded salad and voila: Easter Dinner.

Since bangers and mash are really, technically, breakfast food I shall have a cream cheese & almond coffee cake for dessert. I am so brilliant!

Swami<--- thinking outside the ham.

Things That Are Toast

1. My daffodils. It went down to to 9 freaking degrees on Tuesday night. Now as it warms up the daffodils that were far enough developed to push out a flower bud are drooping very sadly. Very very sadly. *sob* I want daffodils!

2. My appetite for cauliflower. I used to love raw cauliflower with dip and ate it every single day! The last few heads I have bought have just mouldered away in the frige. I want it, but I don't want it.

3. My peace of mind. Did you see that bit about the woman whose house was stripped by salvagers after someone posted an ad on Craig's List giving her address and inviting people to come help themselves? They took all her stuff and her water heater, her countertops, her furniture, her cupboards and the kitchen sink! Jeez!

4. Uh... The pink peeps ~urp~

See How They Run

So last night Mr Swami went downstairs to let the cat in because it was going to rain. Since the DD wasn't home he went naked. He opened the patio door and let the cat in. It wasn't raining quite yet so he decided to walk out to the far corner of the new deck to look up at the sky. Which is where he walked into the sweet spot of the motion detector light set high on the back of the house. SPOTLIGHT!

Lol, he came back in much quicker than he left! And we'll never really know if anyone saw his naked, manly glory or his naked, manly sprint. Either way, we both had a nice laugh.

Monday Miscellany

1. Daffodils. The daffodils over my septic tank are about to bloom. Spring is here! I like my septic tank garden. The bulbs come up early, I can carry over zone 5 plants in a zone 4 climate, and ever since that spillage incident of a few years ago the soil is extremely fertile.

2. Dwarf Vomit. If I have to watch Charla hurl one more time I am going to personally upchuck into a ziplock and mail it to CBS. That'll show 'em.

3. My New Shower Curtain is so pretty! It looks like one foot, quilted squares of lizard and snake skin in shades of grey-brown and brown. The fabric is one of those microfiber things, very heavy and with a brushed, textured finish. The squares are sewn together (not printed). Mr. Swami is so happy. How many guys have a leather shower curtain?

4. Chili. Mr. Swami was quite fartulent last night. That'll teach me to make extra spicey chili.

5. Mr. Swami thinks pears should be eaten when they are green and crunchy. So I had 3 pears in my fruit bowl this weekend that finally - just last night - looked ready to eat. I was thinking sliced pear for breakfast! But Mr. Swami evidently took all 3 pears to work for his lunch. Why? Why take all three? We had apples. We had oranges. We had bananas. We had strawberries. We had kiwi...

6. It's still rainy here. I like rain but I have 2 more bird houses to hang and ladders are so iffy in muddy soil.

7. The ice-maker on my frige was broken for 4 days. I tried everything I could think of to make it work then finally called the repair shop on Friday. Saturday morning it miraculously started working. Now I have to remember to call the repair man off before he arrives later today and charges me for the trip.

8. Baby needs new shoes. Baby is 21 y.o., 6' 2" and wears size 12W, lol.

9. I have wanted jelly beans ever since Monsty asked what my favorite flavor was. Nice Jelly Bellies - not those thick-skinned things that they sell in bags at the grocer's, and not those Starburst flavored ones - they're gross. Nice, tiny little Jelly Bellies with flavors like Pina Colada, Strawberry Daiquiri, and Tutti Fruiti. I can't remember where to buy them locally anymore.

10. I never did answer MTW's religious question on his blog. Maybe I'll do my (long) answer for an over-Easter blog entry. Would that be too annoying?

Oops - I did ten things! Usually I stop at 9. Sorry.
