I found this cute little animated .gif to use for my posts, but it won't come to life for me. Can I fix that without a lot of complicated html mumbo-jumbo? I am not an html savant. Think 'barely competent' here.
What's supposed to happen is the little girl scoops up a shovel full of sand, dumps it in the bucket, and then smiles sweetly at the camera. It's so freakin' cute! Y'all will just have to imagine it.
Maybe you have to have the picture hosted by somewhere else. Syren made me a nice little fairy thing when I first joined blogland, but the URL address was a photobucket account.
Maybe that's it. Don't ask me how to get a photobucket account, though. I have no idea.
This is an animation I have saved in my own hard drive. I found it once when I was wandering aimlessly thru space, and I liked it! I have posted it (long ago) from my hard drive to other places and it worked. Since it had to be posted somewhere to use on blogger, I stuck it into one of my own old blog posts and got a URL address from there. I thought I was being quite clever - but maybe that's my problem?

Did you spin around 3 times and chant hum- a - na-hum-a-na-hum-huh, then sprinkle glitter? If so and nothing happens I have nothing.
html stuff is Chinese to me.
Spins around & chants. Tinkles glitter. Ow! That smarts! And my little girl is still dead.

I think I know what the problem is... I don't think blogger allows .gifs for some reason. Maybe the animation takes up too much server space?
Anyway, I've tried animations in the past and it seems blogger automatically changes them to .jpegs
So... the bad news is, I don't think you can do it, but the good news is you are not the one who's doing anything wrong!

OK, I know I uploaded a gif to Blogger ages ago and used it in a post. I looked that up and it played just fine on the blog itself.
Just now, I tried to make it my icon and was told that the maximum file size is 50kilobytes.
So maybe your file's too big. If you have a graphics program, you could fiddle around with it until it's small enough.
I just came here to say that you crack me up, Swami. Some of your comments honestly make me snort. *smooch*
I *just* learned to do the links, so I'm no help at all. Sorry.
