Today I am buying three gravesites - for me, Mr Swami & our DS. For special effects I will do this on a gloomy day, in the rain. Very appropriate, yes? But they're nice graves - on a hillside, shaded with mature cedar trees, over-looking a very small wetland. It's a place I happen to drive by often, at least once a week.
We are not planning on using these purchases any time soon, but want this cemetary before it sells out. It's a smaller, non-denominational, historic cemetary dating from 1871.

I know how you feel. We bought gravesites a few years ago. However, we bought in a part of the cemetery that's not built yet. If we die before it's built, then they'll have to bury us and relocate us after it's built. Wonderful. I'm not planning on it.
That is a very grown up thing to do!
Will we ever get to a point where all cemetaries are full?
I am to be cremated. Not reaaly sure what to do with the ashes. A friend of mine lost her niece a few years back. Then when my friend's mom died, they used they put the ashes into concrete and made a bench at the little girl's gravesite, so she could be with her granddaughter forever.
Puffy, I would be very hard to move since I am planning on the greenest funeral possible at the time. :)
There's a lot of room out here in the country. I think maybe big city cemetaries are already full. Especially in Chicago!
This cemetary has an expansion area that can't be accessed until the County builds a new road East of the wetland, which is in the long-term development plan.
Boo, my parents were both cremated, my brother was cremated and both my sisters plan to be cremated. So I am the family maverick, I guess. I want to go back to the earth.
My brother's wife scattered his ashes on their driveway for Pete's sake. Because he always loved his cars or some stupid reason like that. I think she just wanted to be done with him.
Mr Swami is very happy that I found this cemetary & set up our purchase. Especially since we got one of the last 2 hillside family sits available! And I think he has always been disappointed in the rather unlovely location where his father is buried.
I like the old section because it is so pretty, with many monuments from the late 1800s. Because it is a tree-ed hillside the graves are not in perfect geometric rows but flow around the topography and existing old trees. I like the asymmetry. In the new parts and in all expansion parts to be built when the county road goes in everyone will be in neat, perfectly straight rows with all trees planted in rows too. Not my thing!
A family "sit" means a 'family site.' Must type more carefully...
I think part of the reason I want to be cremated is so I don't have to deal with buying a burial plot. You are so responsible.
I like visiting old cemeteries when I'm on vacation. I also like looking at old graves here in town and finding graves of famous people.

However, I'm with Kim on the whole cremation thing. DH wants to be buried.
My parents bought four sites years ago. I'll be buried next to them, and if I ever get hitched (not very likely) then hubby can be next to me. Or not. I'll be dead, so I'm sure I won't really care. If the extra plot goes unused I'm sure my nephews will sell it.
The cemetary is called a "memorial garden". It's really lovely, and my dad took great comfort in visiting Mom there. Since Dad died I've only been there twice as I don't really care to go to cemeteries. But I do agree it's a nice, peaceful place.
My next "grown up" step is to purchase a coffin and vault. Mom and Dad did all that years ago, to include prepaying for their funerals. I cannot tell you what a relief it was not to have to pay for burying either of them. It truly was a gift they left to us.
MIL bought an extra deep plt for my FIL with the plan that once she goes she'l get buried right on top of him.
Personally, I find the whole thing creepy, although I love that you set the scene with rain and gloom for effect.
I haven't even got a will. Can't bear to think about it.
I never heard of an extra-deep pit. Mr Swami & I would have issues about who got to be on top forever.
