Tuesday Randoms

I haven't done a Randoms post lately, and I am feeling very random today...

1. We had grilled filet mignon for dinner last night, with baked potatoes and a medley of peas and carrots. A very traditional kind of meal for the un-traditional me - but dang that filet was meltingly tender and delish!

2. Which brings me to: cheap BBQ grills. We are on our 3rd or 4th gas BBQ grill. They just don't last! Oh, the outside box looks nice but the interior metals, down around where the flames come out, those just rot away. It makes me so annoyed. If you spend $150 or so on a grill the darn thing should last more than 4-5 years. Mr. Swami wants to get a more expensive grill on the theory that it will last longer, but I am more pessimistic.

3. My morning paper says that 16% of U.S. high school biology teachers are creationists and instruct their students that creationism is a valid alternative to the theory of evolution. That strikes me as a pretty high percentage of teachers who don't know they are proselytizing their chosen religion.

4. Countdown. One week until I get a visit from my DD who lives in NY, and the World's Cutest Grandson! They will be here for the 4th of July.

5. We can't find the software for my Adobe Photoshop Elements. I will order a new copy from Amazon today, then I will be back in the photo business and able to post pics again. Like - you haven't seen my new pet tortoises Boris & Natasha yet. And I may have a cute kid pic or two pretty soon also!

6. Sorry, I can't think of a 6.

7. I am going to have the splotchy, marshmallow ceiling in the office painted the same medium taupe color as I have on my kitchen walls. It will go well with the current wallpaper - which I really like. Which brings me to this question: what color are your ceilings? Traditional white? Or other?

8. I am cleaning closet corners today (and yesterday too.) I have the bad habit of doing a quick pick-up when I want the house to look good because someone is coming over - and sticking random stuff into a grocery bag which I then stick in the closet or some remote, unviewable corner. Where said bag just sits, sometimes for months. It's a bad habit, but so darn quick & convenient!

9. What should I have for dinner? I'm thinking salmon on the grill.

10. How do you cook catfish so it doesn't feel all greasy in your mouth? I bought some catfish 'chunks' (for lack of a better word.) (I think the backroom guy was learning to fillet and messing it up or something.) Anyway, I rubbed them with some spices and put them into a very hot oven thinking that would cook the greasiness out. But it didn't.

11. I bought a big rosemary plant but then I realized that I don't use rosemary much when I cook. I really love fresh basil but I don't get enough sun for it to grow well here. Maybe I will buy some lamb and just wrap it in rosemary for the grill. Lamb & rosemary is good.

12. Nipa got eliminated from the Next Food Network Star. She wanted to promote "Indian" cooking, but she was a one-note cook. She made Gujerati food, period. She refused to create any fusion dishes - which is what could make her Gujerati food more appealing - and she had no idea what to do with seafood.

Hmmm. A lot of those entries were about food. Can you tell I haven't had breakfast yet?

That's a alot of randoms...so I'll reply to what I remember most.

Yay for the grandson visit. That means we'll get cute pics, right (assuming you get your software installed).

Filet sounds yummy, as does salmon for dinner tonight. Catfish is not my favorite thing in the world and I'm not sure I've ever cooked it myself. My grandma loved it.

My ceilings are "water chestnut" (as is the base color for other walls), but I've often thought of painting them to match the rest of the room.

Oh, grills! We always bought the $100-150 versions and went through two in about six years. Then we upgraded to a Weber (silver, I think?). It's been five years and it's still doing a great job. The ignitor switch sometimes sticks, but a little jostling and it pops back out. We don't take the best care of our grills (don't cover it), so I'm not surprised. If I get another good four years out of this one, I'll be happy with the $300 investment.

Oh, and Nipa. I was over Nipa on challenge two. Glad to see her gone, although I think Shane is long overdue, too.

1. Filet Mignon is divine. Food of the gods.

2. Michael purchased a fancy grill when we moved to this house. It rusted out. He lost the receipt, so no warranty. We just bought a new one, which we hooked up to the natural gas in our house. No more propane tanks.

3. Too much to process.

4. Yay for you!!!

5. Obviously we want to see new pictures of your grandson.

6. This doesn't count. I will use it for myself. Certain people at OT make me GAG! There is a keyword here.

7. We have textured ceilings throughout. The look white. Michael has informed me that we cannot simply paint them.

8. Yuck!

9. Yuck!

10. I don't cook it. *grin*

11. I don't cook enough to have any plants. I just use jarred spices.

12. I don't watch this.

In case you wonder about my "yucks," I don't eat seafood.

I don't think I knew you didn't eat any seafood, Boo.

Also, Swami, someone else JUST talked to me about not using much rosemary! I often use a whole stalk to lay on baking chicken, fish or beef. Anything that cooks a long time on the grill or in the oven should be good. Plus I use it a lot with potato dishes (bacon, onions, garlic, rosemary) and on veggies (goes well with grilled zucchini). Mash some up with some olive oil and let it sit for a few days. Yummy flavored oil.

Too many randoms to respond.. but I am also glad Nipa was sent home. On that same note, Kelsi is the SIL of a friend of mine.. so we are rooting for her.

Salmon on the grill sounds yummy!

You hooked it up to the natural gas in your house?
*head tilt*
People can do that? Is there too muchwater vapor produced by the propane? Is that why grills rust out?

Kim, Mr Swami wants a big fat Weber.

Rosemary on fish? Salmon maybe? I guess I will never know until I try it!

Is Kelsi the sweetie who wears fake flowers in her hair and apologizes all the time? I am so terrible with reality show names these days. Like they are all interchangeable or something, heh.

We replace the "innerds" of the gas BBQ.

Our ceilings are the color "swiss coffee." I don't know why it's named "swiss coffee," but it's white. Our new entry door and new garage door will be white, too.

The slopes and hills surrounding my house are covered in rosemary. It's a good groundcover.

I'm loving "Groomer Has It."

The rosemary was awesome with my salmon, Kim! I put on a little paprika, some onion powder and then layed sprigs of fresh rosemary across the meat side of the fillet. Grill & enjoy! *licks lips*

Puffy, I am rooting for Artist. I wanted an Artist / Jorge finale. Jonathan is a good groomer but he doesn't seem to care about the dogs as much as the other two do. Go Artist!

Artist has to win!! I like him as a person. Jonathan is shallow and full of himself. By the way, yesterday I received a pocket day planner from the Humane Society.
